    Our History

Helping Hands for Children was created from Natalie’s mission to give every child a second chance and a brighter future. From the start, our focus has been supporting boys who’ve faced hardship by offering safety, guidance, and hope. Over the years, we’ve grown into a trauma‑informed program dedicated to healing, stability, and opportunity. Our purpose remains the same — to help children rebuild their lives and become the future leaders our communities need.

    Our History

Our staff is the strength of Helping Hands for Children. Led by Founder Natalie Ortiz, our team is united by a shared mission to give every child safety, support, and a second chance. Working alongside her, Josemel Herrera helps oversee daily operations with consistency and compassion, while Cheryl Reed supports program development and ensures our care remains structured, trauma‑informed, and child‑centered.

Beyond leadership, our facility staff plays a vital role every day. From direct‑care professionals to support personnel, each team member brings patience, dedication, and heart to the children we serve. Together, we create a stable, nurturing environment where every child can heal, grow, and move toward a brighter future.

We are grateful for the organizations and leaders who support our mission:

    • Alpha Heating & Cooling –  One of our strongest community partners, providing essential support that directly impacts the children we serve. Their commitment, resources, and belief in our mission help us create safer, stronger, and more stable environments for every child. Their partnership continues to drive real change and expand our ability to reach more youth in need.
    • Strand AE – Generously supported by Tamara “Tami” Spicer, President, whose contributions help strengthen our programs.
    • Lennox – Valued partner helping us improve the environment and care we provide to our children.

Helping Hands for Children proudly partners with Rejo Helping Hands to expand opportunities for youth in care. Together, we provide trauma‑informed support, life‑skills training, and a safe environment that empowers every child to grow with confidence and purpose.

These partners help us expand our mission and create brighter futures for the youth we serve.

A Legacy Built by Hand, Guided by Heart, and Passed Through Generations

Built by the People Who Became Family

Some families are born. Others are built — by the people who show up, who stay, and who decide a child is worth fighting for.

Natalie Ortiz learned that early, watching her grandmother feed the hungry, comfort the hurting, and never close her door to anyone in need. That one example — kindness as a way of life, not a single act — became the seed of everything Helping Hands stands for today.

But this home was never built by one person. It was built by the people Natalie has met along the way — mentors, partners, neighbors, and friends who didn't share her last name but became her family all the same. People who showed up with their time, their trust, and their belief that these boys are worth investing in.

In just four years, that family has served over 250 children — giving each one a safe place to land and someone in their corner.

The people who pour into these children every day — including operations lead Josemel Herrera, program development leader Cheryl Reed, and the caregivers who make this a home, not a facility — are the heart of what we do.

We're also grateful for the partners who stand with us: Alpha Heating & Cooling, which provides hands-on support and helps build real workforce pathways for our youth; Lennox, for their generous equipment support; and Strand AE, led by President Tamara "Tami" Spicer. We're also building a pathway with Dallas College to create career and apprenticeship opportunities for the youth in our care as they prepare for adulthood.

And most of all, this home was built around the boys themselves — ages 7 to 17 — who walk through our doors needing a safe place to land, and become part of the family too.

    No More Trash Bags

Too many children in the system carry everything they own in a trash bag. We believe that no child should ever have to. Through our No More Trash Bags program, every child who comes to us — and every child who leaves — does so with a proper bag of their own: a backpack, a gym bag, or luggage they can call theirs. It's a simple thing, but it tells a child what they need to hear most: you matter, and your belongings — and you — deserve dignity.

    Preparing Them for Life

We don't just give these boys a place to stay — we give them the tools to stand on their own. Through hands-on workshops, our youth build the real-world skills that carry them into adulthood:

    • Cooking classes — learning to prepare meals and care for themselves
    • Life skills training — the everyday abilities that build independence
    • Hands-on trade work — practical experience that opens career doors
    • Financial workshops — money management, saving, and planning ahead
    • Boundaries workshops — building healthy relationships and self-respect

    What every child here receives:

    • Safety and a stable place to call home
    • Guidance from people who show up every day
    • Real opportunities — education, life skills, and pathways toward a future
    • The belief that they are seen, valued, and never alone

Helping Hands for Children isn't just a residential program. It's a family built by many hands — serving over 250 children in four years, and growing every time someone decides a child is worth it.
